New double sided foam tapes, plus the latest in laser labels
and heat activated film products on show by tesa UK at the
Fastening & Assembly Solutions Exhibition, National Motorcycle Museum,
Birmingham, October 29, 2009

Three double sided foam tape products from tesa UK Limited will make their debut at the Fastening & Assembly Solutions Exhibition this year, alongside the latest in laser labels and heat activated film products. Armed with samples and technical data the company is inviting companies to bring their fastening problems to its stand.

The new double sided foam mounting tapes are aimed at high performance consumer electronics applications and non-permanent stress fastening applications. Developed to offer optimum mechanical and environmental performance the products extend the thickness range within the company’s thin foam tape assortment.

Two tapes – tesa 62946 and tesa 62948 – have been designed for technically demanding use such as the fastening touch panels, lenses and decorative trims for electronic and electrical goods. Both tapes feature PET film reinforcement to improve stiffness and handling during the production of die cut forms frequently used during manufacturing processes in these industries. Also common is a tackified acrylic adhesive system, particularly suited to outdoor and high temperature environments, that optimises adhesive performance on high energy surfaces such as metal and glass. Additionally, the highly conformable foam backing compensates for design tolerances and uneven surfaces while the elasticity of the foam accommodates the different expansion parts bonded. Dampening properties and shock absorption are excellent.

Completing this trio of new products is tesa 62939, a double sided 3000µm thick tape that targets lighter weight sealing applications. Utilising low strength closed cell PE foam with large cells and a thinner membrane the tape is exceptionally conformable and ideal for gap filling. A versatile tackified adhesive allows the tape to be used outdoors and on a very wide range of substrates where it exhibits excellent immediate adhesion on uneven surfaces. The tape offers good resistance to humidity and is UV, water and aging resistant. Typical applications include the mounting of wood, metal or vinyl window components where a 3mm gap is required and where a thick tape is needed to compensate for variations in wall surface texture and alignment. It can also be used as a seal between aluminium, vinyl, wood and sandwich materials as found in partition walls in buildings and for fixing solar panel junction boxes.

Designed for product identification plates, warning or instruction labels, tesa Laser-Label self adhesive laser foils offer extremely clear and precise marking with maximum design flexibility. Labels can be produced in one step and so lend themselves to ‘Just in Time’ manufacturing processes. Small lots can be produced quickly and cost effectively so purchase, logistics and administration costs are minimized. The labels also offer tamper evident security.

Resistant to heat, abrasion, UV radiation and chemicals, the labels feature a high performance acrylic adhesive system that ensures a secure bond to different substrates including steel, aluminium, painted surfaces and many plastics. Double layered laser engraved foils and single layer marking through colour activated pigments offer a variety of marking options. All the labels can be marked using standard or automated laser equipment.

Examples of reliable, high strength bonded splices made with tesa HAF (heat activated film) will also be on show. Using special adhesive formulations based on phenolic resin, maximum adhesive strength of up to 31N/mm2 coupled with fast, easy processing is achieved on an extremely wide range of materials. HAF tapes enable an even distribution of stress in joints and offer good chemical and aging resistance. The film becomes adhesive at 70oC and can withstand temperatures over 500oC. Processing is clean and curing times are short.
Thin, flexible splices can be one or two sided, oblique, single or multiple. All the films are suitable for use on automated manufacturing plant and are offered with release liners, in rolls or as die cuts.

Applications include the joining of roofing and waterproofing membranes, glass fibre mats, aluminium strip, sand paper, conveyor belting, floor coverings, plastics sheeting and foam products.
