Which Adhesive Tape Is Right for the Job?

Whether an adhesive tape holds securely to a particular surface and can be removed without leaving residue behind depends on the tape’s adhesion and on the surface. But which tape is the best one for a particular surface?

Adhesive tapes are used to protect surfaces and mark work areas, indoors and out

Selecting the right adhesive tape depends on a number of factors:

  • The surface requiring protection (e.g. adhesion to the surface and ability of the surface to withstand adhesion; chemical and mechanical influences; smooth, rough, structured)
  • The intended duration of use
  • The intended application (e.g. plaster or stucco, coating)
  • Interior or exterior use (e.g. resistance to temperature, weathering, UV radiation)

To ensure sufficient adhesion, the surface that is to be masked must be dry and clear of all dust, oil and grease.
Adhesive tape can be used (applied, removed) within a temperature range of +5°C to +40°C. Temperatures may be below or above this range while the tape is in place.
If you intend to apply tape at temperatures below +5°C or above +40°C, special adhesive tapes must be used. If the component that is to be masked is expected to be exposed to substantially higher temperatures (e.g. over 60°C) while the tape is in place, special measures are needed, including the use of special adhesive tapes (such as those with acrylate adhesive masses), double masking and the like.
Adhesive tapes with acrylate adhesives are generally UV-resistant and suitable for higher temperatures.
If there is additional mechanical strain, it may be recommended to use an additional adhesive tape, such as a layer of PVC tape on top of the temperature-resistant, UV-stable tape. For detailed information, see the technical data sheets published by the adhesive tape manufacturers.
If you plan to use adhesive tapes outdoors, you need to ensure that the tape you use is resistant to precipitation and moisture.
