The construction of high performance cloth tapes are notably different to duct tapes and gaffer tapes. Firstly, the mesh count is significantly higher at between 120 and 148 meaning the tensile strength is very much higher (e.g. 120 n/cm for tesa 4561 compared to 34 N/cm for tesa 4613 duct tape and 52 N/cm for tesa 4688 cloth gaffer tape). The adhesive offer very high adhesion – sometimes even to oily surfaces as is the case with tesa 4651 – and good abrasion resistance.
The coating is also different being an acrylic paste rather than a PE film. The key benefit is a much improved resistance to UV and weathering making these cloth tapes more suitable for outdoor use for prolonged periods. These tapes are also available in a variety of colours.
Additionally we have two completely uncoated cloth tapes, tesa 4541 and tesa 4549 which are for internal applications only, for example wiring looms. Both of these uncoated cloth tapes have a very high tear-resistance – the ease with which a cloth tape can be torn by hand – and is a direct relationship to the mesh count but also the (amount of) surface coating.
